Zim Davis Cup team in winning start

HARARE - Zimbabwe’s Davis Cup team started the Africa Zone Group III tournament on a positive note after beating Kenya 3-0 in Egypt yesterday.

Zimbabwe’s Tinotenda Chanakira outclassed Kenya’s Ibrahim Yego 6-1, 6-1 while Mark Fyne beat Mohammed Fazal Khan 6-2, 6-3 to register 2-0 lead in the singles.

Captain Martin Dzuwa and Takanyi Garanganga then put the tie beyond the reach of Kenyans after beating Ibrahim Yego and Kevin Cheruiyot Langat 6-4, 6-4 in the doubles.

Zimbabwe will now take on Ghana today as they hope to extend their winning run at the tournament.

“We are happy to win our first game and we are preparing for tomorrow (today). We need to continue with our winning ways,” Dzuwa told the Daily News from the Egyptian capital Cairo yesterday.

“We are prepared for tomorrow’s (today) game, However, I would not like to talk much about our next opponent but personally I do not think this should be viewed as an extraordinary challenge for us.

“I told you from the start that we have very high chances of qualifying for the Group II for next year depending with the commitment of the players.

“The chances are there, last year we missed by one match, we were third.”

The two top ranked teams at the end of the tournament in Cairo will be promoted to Europe/Africa Zone Group II for 2014. - Blessings Mashaya
