The Herald - renowned pedlars of lies

HARARE - If the last two years since the Daily News came back from its decade-long forced closure by President Robert Mugabe's government are anything to go by, Zimbabweans can safely conclude that The Herald and the Sunday Mail, love the Daily News.

Indeed, hardly a day passes by without these famed lickspittle bootlickers of Zanu PF and its overfed "chefs" mentioning the Daily News somewhere, somehow in their discredited columns.

Yesterday, The Herald, which some Zimbabweans now derisively call the Tsvangirai Herald – because of the paper's hilarious, if not fatal obsession with Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai – ran with another front page "scoop" alleging, falsely, that some Daily News staff members were working with "regime change merchants" to topple the kleptocracy that has run our country since independence in 1980.

As usual, it was another figment of His Master's Voice's fertile imagination. Utter and complete lies.

Before this, readers of this Zanu PF propaganda mouthpiece were told last week that the Daily News had somehow "jumped ship" – in yet another masterpiece of creative, fiction writing.

Where we jumped from and to where was not explained by the poor paper, some of whose editors would make even Adolf Hitler's infamous liar-in-chief, Joseph Goebbels, blush with embarassment were he still alive and watching this amateurish and misguided zealotry.

Remember too, that these poodle media channels initially attempted, but failed dismally and spectacularly – because it was yet another ginormous lie – to allege that in fact the Daily News was being funded by the hated "regime change merchants".

In those early days, officials from the "revenue authorities" (code for spooks) literally camped at our offices to scrutinise our books.

Suffice to say that these "officials" left with their sorry tails between their legs, and the false stories disappeared as quickly as they had started.

The good thing is that Zimbabweans are very smart, perceptive people who have always easily read through this pathetic propaganda and lies.

Just dig into history to confirm this.

Another amazing thing is that while these would-be competitors of ours obviously think, erroneously, that they are damaging the Daily News and its reputation when they brew, contrive and contort all these lies, they are in fact positively affirming us, albeit, unwittingly.

They are raising both our profile and talkability in the market – and affirming what all Zimbabweans already know – not just that the Daily News has recaptured its market-leading position that we had lost when we were shut down unjustly in September 2003, but also that we have once again, indisputably, become the most powerful and influential media brand in Zimbabwe!

Hence the obsession with what the Daily News does and does not do.

It's beautiful, in a bizarre way.

Indeed, there is no greater praise, affirmation or endorsement of our professionalism and winning journalism than that which comes from direct competitors – be they at Herald House, Pockets Hill or some other confused fledgling corners, which is what has happened regularly over the past two years.

To our hundreds of thousands of readers, well-wishers and advertisers we say thank you for making us who we are in our short time back.

We promise you that we will continue to tell it like it is. Without Fear.

Without Favour... as confirmed by our would-be competitors! - Staff Writer
