Kirsty robber jailed

HARARE - A vagrant who robbed Olympic gold medallist Kirsty Coventry as she was coming from the airport has been sentenced to an effective one year in prison.

Marlvin Mushonga was lucky to escape with a lesser prison term after magistrate Musaiona Shortgame suspended one year on condition of good behaviour while two years were further set aside on condition he pays back for the stolen items.

Prosecutor Crispen Mavengano told the court that on April 27, Coventry was on her way home from the airport with her family members travelling along Glenara Road in Eastlea.

It is the State’s case that while at the intersection of Glenara Avenue and Robert Mugabe Way, Mushonga and his four accomplices who are still at large approached the car.

One of the gang members allegedly smashed the back window and grabbed bags that were inside.

Coventry is alleged to have wrestled with one of the robbers and she sustained a cut on her palm.

The court heard that other family members allegedly jumped out of the car and Mushonga’s accomplices fled.

Mushonga was caught by Coventry’s husband Tyrone Seward, who had given a spirited chase and recovered one of the bags containing an Apple laptop, I-phone 4 mobile phone, clothes and other electric gadgets worth $5 600. - Helen Kadirire
