Zim wins Cossasa games

HARARE - Zimbabwe are this year’s champions of the Confederation Schools Sports Association of Southern African (COSASA) athletics games held at National Sports Stadium over the weekend.

The hosts finished with 61 medals; 19 gold, 20 silver and 22bronze to scoop the title ahead of second placed Namibia who collected38 medals; 19 gold, 11 silver and 8 bronze.

Zambia finished on third place with 27 medals while Botswana bagged 20 to finish fourth ahead of Lesotho who had 4.

Zimbabwe National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) president Johnson Madhuku, who is also Cossasa vice president, said they were happy to win the title and praised his athletes.

“We are happy to be this year’s champions .We owe it to hard work and I would like to give credit to the athletes,” Madhuku told the Daily News yesterday.

Team Zimbabwe’s squad blends school kids from areas as far as Chipinge, Zaka, Gwanda, Hwange and Kariba.

“Cossasa aims at ensuring the development of school sport in member countries to a level which suits international competitions like the Olympics and other World Cup tournaments.”

Madhuku stressed that the tournament is meant to empower youngsters and expose talent within school children which in turn help them to advance in their sporting careers.

Cossasa competitions cater for both primary and secondary schools represented by the Under-13 and Under-17 age groups respectively.

Participants competed in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m, the 4x100mand 4x400m relay events and while in the field events included high jump, triple jump, javelin, discus and long jump. - Blessings Mashaya
