Makoni's sheer historic mischief

HARARE - It is becoming common knowledge that any desperate politician in Zimbabwe’s political discourse seeking cheap mileage can only do so by attacking the MDC precisely its leader Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

This explains why Tsvangirai matters, perhaps at this critical juncture. The heavy doses of propaganda invested to attack Tsvangirai’s image; personality and political stature are all clear testimonies of a man unto which the future of Zimbabwe’s transitional paradigm is thrust upon.

Once again, the country’s academic fraternity continues to exhibit its pitfalls in political ventures as has been evidenced by Dr. Simba Makoni’s criticisms of the MDC.

Makoni has his democratic and inalienable right to articulate what he deems necessary but as long as it is not based on empirical evidence especially coming from academic people of his calibre it will never go unchallenged.

Recent attacks by Makoni on the MDC in as much as performance in the coalition government is concerned, is another hula boo aimed at seeking relevance and populism where there is none. Makoni is pathetically obsessed by some “special” guy mentality.

He thinks there is certain political speciality bestowed solely on him that the people cannot do without.

Such arrogance will cost him his political future.

Many still remember Simba as the greatest democratic spoiler par-excellence. It is still very difficult to separate Simba from Zanu PF and his Mavambo/ Kusile/ Dawn project from a sinister ploy that was aimed at preventing Tsvangirai from outright 2008 electoral victory.

It was Simba who cost Zimbabwe a fortune by reversing gains of democratic consolidation investment by half a decade.

Now he proclaims the MDC could have done more, done better, among the so obvious jibe made by politicians entrapped in the tormenting political wilderness of irrelevance.

He now forgets it was through his historic 11th hour mischief that gave birth to the government he now pretends to dislike. We also remember his dismal failure as Zanu PF Finance minister when of all the things he scrapped prices of beer and bicycles.

He has suddenly wakened from his political cocoon, five years following his historic democratic hijack when he unnecessarily split the vote to serve Zanu PF from extinction. By his irritating and continued counter- productive accusations to the MDC, he is revoking memories that he has failed to change.

After all Dumiso Dabengwa the Mavambo architect confessed openly that it was a Zanu PF project aimed at serving its leader President Robert Mugabe from being overally trounced in an election.

Could it be that the owners of the project are now demanding that Makoni run for his money once more?
Could it be that all his current antics are a smokescreen aimed at duping the electorate again?

As such Zimbabweans cannot choose to dine and wine with a spoiler. Simba had reluctantly felt comfortable in maintaining the project under his close guard, closing all democratic space for other stalwarts in his pseudo-political party.

Former party spokesperson Silver Bhebhe once claimed that Mavambo is still controlled by people within Zanu PF.

“Yes the party is falling apart. He (Makoni) does not want the party to grow. I think it is a correct assessment that this party was a Zanu PF proxy waiting for its masters in Zanu PF. We would make a resolution and it seems Makoni would go back to his principals, these invisible hands, his handlers and he is probably told not to action the resolution.”

Only fools do not change their minds, so said former United Nations secretary-general Boutros-Boutros Ghali, following his decision to seek re-election at the helm of the world organisation. Boutros, an Egyptian diplomat was justifying his decision to run for another term contrary to his undertaking to serve only one term.
Perhaps Makoni has failed to take a leaf from the Egyptian diplomat and sooner than later history will position him where he belongs — the national archives. - Alexander Rusero
