Builder gets six years for sodomising boy

HARARE - A builder at Bob Farm has been sentenced to an effective six years in prison after he was found guilty of aggravated indecent assault.

Taipa Katumba, 37, had initially been sentenced to nine years but three were suspended on condition of good behaviour, after he sodomised his son’s friend.

Facts are that on March 21 this year the five-year-old boy went to see his friend to play.

When he arrived at Katumba’s house, Katumba told his son to go and take a bath at a nearby stream.

Katumba told the boy to remain at home and upon his return he told the boy to enter into the house and he complied.

While in the house Katumba told the boy to remove his shorts and face downwards while sleeping on the bed.

The court heard that Katumba spat some saliva on the boy’s bums and went on to sodomise the boy.

While Katumba was abusing the boy, Joseph Homani peeped through the window and saw what was happening.

Homani shouted at Katumba who immediately stopped what he was doing and quickly got dressed.

He dashed outside with the boy following behind.

Regional magistrate Mupeiwa said what Katumba did was seriously deplorable as society shun upon people who sexually abuse let alone force themselves on others.

“The age of the boy is very much worrying because he is aged five years and is not capable of giving consent. Katumba took advantage of the youthful age of the boy,” Mupeiwa said. - Helen Kadirire
