Woman steals 11-day old baby

HARARE - Police are on the hunt for an Epworth woman who fled with an 11-day old baby in Harare’s central business district after the mother had gone shopping for infant milk.

What started as a cordial relationship between Cecilia Nongwe, the mother of the missing baby, and the thief only identified as Mai Devine, ended horribly.

Harare provincial spokesperson Tarirai Dube said the two met on Tuesday and went to the city centre together.

Mai Devine allegedly accompanied Nongwe into town on the pretext that she was going to use her influence to get Nongwe a job.

But upon arriving at a service station along Fourth Street, Nongwe asked her “new friend” to hold the baby while she went shopping for milk—but when she returned Mai Devine had vanished together with the baby, Dube said.

Police said Nongwe had assisted Mai Devine find accommodation in Harare’s shanty Epworth suburb in return for a job offer.

Dube said police is appealing for “anyone who comes across a woman with a baby crying uncontrollably to effect citizen arrest—that is if the woman is not breastfeeding the child”. - Xolisani Ncube
