Winky D to share stage with Tuku

HARARE - After two highly successful joint shows in the United Kingdom with fellow superstar Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi will return to the same country to grace the Southern Africa Music Airwaves (Sama) Festival.

Tuku will be joined by fellow Zimbabwean artistes National Arts Merit Award (Nama) winner Suluman Chimbetu and dancehall star Winky D at the festival which will run at different venues from June 28 to 30.

Sulu’s publicist Jonah Nyamungoma confirmed the invitation to what has been dubbed The Big Three Tour.

“Right now we are still negotiating but it is promising to be a very good deal”, he told the Daily News yesterday.

“It will be Sulu’s first time to participate at the Sama festival and we hope it will not be the last. It goes to show that we are doing things right and people are appreciating.

“It gives a musician satisfaction to be appreciated and invitations to big festivals.

“These are some of the many ways that show that a musician is doing things right,” he said.

The duo of Winky D and Suluman will perform on the first day of the festival in Leicester, with Tuku teaming up with his Zimbabwean counterparts in the family show set for London on June 29.

On June 30, the Zimbabwean trio will wind up their tour of the United Kingdom with a family show in Leeds.

There was no immediate comment on the United Kingdom tour from the Tuku camp with the superstar’s publicist Shepherd Mutamba declining to comment because he is on leave.

Jonathan Banda, the manager of Winky D, who participated in last year’s Sama festival, was unprepared to give full details on the tour to the Daily News yesterday.

“You know when you are preparing for an international show there are several factors to consider and work through”, said Ninja president’s manager.

“The intention to go is there, we are making plans and we are still processing the other things. It’s not something that I can positively confirm now, but the intention is there,” he said.

He, however, proudly confirmed that Winky D’s intention is to remain a Sama festival regular.

“He was there in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 so he is a regular artiste there. We really appreciate all the times we have been playing there,” he said.

Local artistes who rocked the Sama Festival last year included Lady Bee, Mic Inity and Layaan Soljah and several others.

The  other Zimbabwean  artistes who have attended previous  Sama festivals are Boyz Retonaz, The Noisettes led by Shingai Shoniwa and Roki.
