Mr Zim contest returns

HARARE - The country’s premier bodybuilding contest, the Mr Zimbabwe, is set to return this year after a five-year of absence, the Daily News has learnt.

Mr Zimbabwe was last held in 2008 at the Harare International Conference Centre and won by muscleman Tarirai Chirume.

Mr Iron Man, the second largest contest after Mr Zimbabwe, also makes a comeback this year since Vincent Kandiero won the title two years ago.

Newly-appointed president of the National Federation of Zimbabwe Bodybuilding and Fitness (NFZBBF) Otis Goredema said the long wait is over and athletes will battle it out before the end of the year.

“We undertook to bring back the premier competitions after so many years of silence because the sport was as good as dead without these contests,” Goredema told the Daily News yesterday.

“Bodybuilding has been taken as a money spinning sport in recent times with record prizes never heard of in the history of the game, but to us we believe that our athletes should largely be driven by passion first before the financial aspect hence the reason to bring the celebrated contest.”

Mr Novice will kick start the 2013 competitions calendar on April 6 while Manicaland province host their provincial contest on 25 May.

Matabeleland and Midlands stage their own contest on July 27 while Mr Iron Man will be held on the first of June. The Mashonaland contest is set for August 3.

The biggest domestic show, the Mr Zimbabwe, is pencilled for August 21 in the capital at a venue to be announced in due course.
