Man jailed for seizing corpse

HARARE - A Harare magistrate has jailed two brothers who robbed their father-in law of a corpse and money after a heated argument.

Magistrate Musaiona Shortgame sentenced Benjamin Mukudu, 19 and Bernard Mukudu, 24, to one year in prison.

The pair will however, spend the next seven months behind bars after Shortgame suspended two months on condition of good behaviour.

A further three months were suspended on condition that the two restitute their father-in-law, Kingstone Madziva $300 before month end.

The court heard Madziva who is the Mukudus father-in-law was told that his grandson had died and went to arrange the burial in September last year.

After processing the burial order, Madziva took the body of the deceased from Chitungwiza General Hospital with the intention of going to Bindura to bury his grandson.

The Makudus phoned Madziva advising him to wait for their sister (the deceased’s mother) before taking the body to Bindura for burial.

Madziva later met the pair at Market Square in Harare’s central business district to discuss the way forward.

The duo demanded $500 from Madziva for the upkeep of the deceased.

A misunderstanding erupted and the two started assaulting Madziva.

The pair took Madziva’s car keys, driver’s licence, $300 and the deceased’s body before demanding the burial order.

Madziva later gave them the burial order in exchange for the car keys.

The two then went away with the deceased’s body and Madziva’s belongings. - Ivan Zhakata
