Warriors move up rankings

HARARE - Zimbabwe gained two places to jump to 100th in the latest Fifa rankings issued on Wednesday.

The Warriors’ 2-1 friendly win over Botswana has propelled them into the Top 100.

Klaus-Dieter Pagels’s men also moved up one place on the continental rankings, from number 28 to 27.

The team’s new German coach is hoping to see a continued rise on the rankings when the Warriors  resume their World Cup qualification campaign against Egypt next month.

Newly-crowned African champions Nigeria moved 22 places and are now ranked number 30 in the world, up from 55. The Super Eagles, who won the African Nations Cup title in South Africa on Sunday, gained five places in Africa from number nine to four.

Burkina Faso’s fairy-tale run in the Afcon tournament, reaching their first ever final, has seen them become the biggest movers in the world after gaining 37 places to jump to 55th in the Fifa rankings.

On continental rankings, the Stallions moved 14 places from 23 to 9.

Ivory Coast remained Africa’s top-ranked team on the global rankings on position 12 despite crashing out of the Afcon finals at the quarter-final stage.

There was little movement in the world’s Top 10 with world champions Spain maintaining pole position while Germany are number two with South American giants Argentina  occupying third place. - Blessings Mashaya
