Property agent in $29 000 housing scam

HARARE - A property agent who allegedly swindled a man of $29 000 after selling him a house belonging to someone else has appeared in court.

George Makata, who worked for Lightvale Properties, allegedly swindled Togarepi Zivai Mhetu, 31, of $29 000.

The 32-year-old yesterday appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe on fraud charges.

The court heard that Mhetu sold his house in Waterfalls through Bean Pole Properties for $36 000 last month.

Lightvale is an agent for Bean Pole Properties.

During the same period he was selling his house, Mhetu instructed Bean Pole to look for another house for him in a medium density suburb.

According to state papers, Bean Pole found a house in Glen View 7 belonging to one Precious Katuruza, who is in the United Kingdom.

Makata, who was in possession of documents to Katuruza’s house acted in connivance with several accomplices who are still at large, the court heard.

Using inside information gathered at his office, Makata allegedly forged Katuruza’s identification card. - Ivan Zhakata
