Kombi driver jailed

HARARE - A commuter omnibus driver who hit a pedestrian while fleeing from cops has been slapped with a 15-month jail term.

Albert Mawire, 42, will spend the next 12 months behind bars after Harare magistrate Tendai Mahwe suspended three months on condition of good behaviour.

Mawire was barred from driving for two years and his driver’s licence was cancelled.

“The behaviour of drivers is now a cause for concern and the court needs to pass a deterrent sentence in order to deter would-be offenders,” said the magistrate when passing sentence.

Mawire was parked at the corner of Robert Mugabe and Mbuya Nehanda streets in October last year where he was in a queue waiting to load passengers.

According to State papers, a commuter omnibus parked in front of Mawire was loading passengers while he waited for his chance when he saw police officers approaching his vehicle.

In a bid to escape, he drove the vehicle at high speed and hit a pedestrian who sustained head injuries.

The pedestrian was helped by members of the public and later filed a police report leading to Mawire’s arrest. - Ivan Zhakata
