Makoto bags another title

HARARE - Rising Zimbabwean chess player and one of the country’s most consistent sportsmen, Fide Master Rodwell Makoto, added another trophy to his cabinet when he won the Blairegowire Rapid title in Johannesburg over the weekend.

Makoto finished with six points from seven games after winning five games and drawing two.

The draws were against Musatwe Simutowe of Zambia and Malawian Richard Mbedza.

Makoto, slowly becoming one of the country’s leading sporting ambassador, then romped home by beating Fide Master Matt Pon in the final.

“The competition was good but I won quite comfortably at the end,” Makoto told the Daily News yesterday.
“I’m happy for winning the title and I’m aiming for more titles this year,” he added.

More than 60 players from South Africa, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe took part in the tournament. - Sports Writer
