Harare to host schools athletics champs

HARARE - Harare Province will host this year’s edition of National Association of Secondary Heads (Nash) Inter-Provincial Athletics Championships at the National Sport Stadium next month.

Nash president Johnson Madhuka said the competition will also serve as trials for the Confederation of Schools Sport Association of Southern Africa Cossasa Games.

“We are expecting an improvement from last year’s competitions. Our athletes performed well in last year’s competitions and this saw most of them going for regional competitions like Cossasa in Namibia. We are expecting the number of athletes being selected this year to increase,” he said.

Mashonaland East are the defending champions after winning last year’s event. The province won won 24 gold medals, 15 silver and 19 bronze medals ahead of second-placed Matabeleland South, who amassed 18 gold medals, eight silver and nine bronze.

Manicaland finished bottom of the championship.

Participants will compete in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m as well as the 4x100m and 4x400m relay events while in the field events participants will fight for honours in high jump, triple jump, javelin, discus and long jump. - Sports Writer
