Seke council to demolish illegal structures

HARARE - Seke Rural District Council is moving to enact a council resolution to demolish all illegal structures in the area.

Manyame Rural District Council chairperson, Masimba Rubatika said councillors are now consulting their parent ministry of Local Government, provincial chairperson Ray Kaukonde and provincial governor Aeneas Chigwedere.

“We are waiting for the response to make our way forward,” Rubatika said. “The council is very disappointed with people who are building illegal structures and we would want to do away with these.”

Two village heads were arrested for selling land in Seke rural but Rubatika said a further step should be taken to demolish illegal structures as a firm deterrent measure.

Seke rural is turning urban with outsiders taking up residential space in large numbers. The Daily News travelled to the rural area and saw construction in rapid progress. In some instances, lands has been parcelled to more than two people.

“People are coming from Harare and Chitungwiza to settle in our area and now we no longer have fields to till our land,” said a village elder, Godfrey Matangira of Marikopo village.

“Land is our survival and it is supposed to be given as inheritance to our children and grand children. It was going to be good to give the land to our family and not to parcel it to strangers.”

The foreigners are accused of introducing prostitution, theft and chikorokoza (hustling) in the village.
