Cops confiscate 3 tonnes of mbanje

HARARE - Police in Harare have impounded over three tonnes of marijuana and arrested a Malawian national ferrying the prohibited drug.

The man, whose name is being withheld by the police as investigations are still underway, was driving a Malawian registered truck.

Harare police spokesperson Tadious Chibanda said although the exact weight of the drug was still to be verified, 41 bags capable of accommodating 90kgs of grain were used to package the substance.

“We suspect the drug came in from Malawi through Nyamapanda Border Post. We are still investigating,” Chibanda said.

According to police, officers on night patrol from Southerton Police Station noticed the truck passing through a service station opposite the station in the early hours of yesterday before tracking it down to Marimba Park, a suburb situated seven kilometres west of the city centre.

“Our police officers are still looking for the owners of the consignment who fled from their premises upon noticing the police,” said Chibanda.
