SA clubs line up Chitiyo

HARARE - Monomotapa star midfielder Ronald “Rooney” Chitiyo could be heading to the Absa Premiership following an intense bidding war for one of Zimbabwe’s finest talents.

Chitiyo, who was named the country’s third best player in the 2012 Castle Premiership season, is said to be on the radar of SuperSport United, Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United in the South African top flight.

The skilful midfielder was one of the outstanding players for Monomotapa last season, chipping in with important goals and assists for his side.

Chitiyo guided the modest Premiership side to a top four finish on the final log standings and a Mbada Diamonds final appearance, where they were beaten 2-0 by eventual winners Dynamos.

Former Warriors, Ajax Cape Town and Moroka Swallows winger Edzai Kasinauyo, who is managing the player, confirmed the developments to Daily News yesterday.

“Yes, it’s true there are clubs in South Africa who have shown interest in Chitiyo,” said Kasinauyo.
“The interest is there but I am trying to get the best deal for the player. I am busy working on something to see which club we can send him to.

“Three clubs has shown interest but I should negotiate with one club and avoid situation where he will move from one club to the other. He is still young and it might end up confusing him.

“He will be leaving any time next week. As you are aware, teams in South Africa have just resumed training and it will be more of physical training. So we will have to take him when the proper training begins next week.”

Chitiyo have the blessings wof his club after the team chairperson Joseph Mukoki told South African media that their policy is not to stand in the way of players once concrete offers have been received.

“We will not stand in his way if we are satisfied with the offer on the table if he passes trials. We are just waiting for communication before he is released for trials as three teams in South Africa want to have a look at him,” Mukoki told Kickoff.

Monomotapa earned a slot to play in the African Confederation Cup by virtue of being Mbada Diamonds Cup runners-up and had been hoping to return to continental football but their dream was turned into a nightmare after they pulled out of the tournament due to financial woes.

As a result, several players who formed the core of their team last year deserted the club.

Monomotapa has already lost goalkeeper Artwell Mukandi and Russel Madamombe to Champions League participants Dynamos while Osbourne Mukuradare has reportedly joined Harare City.

Other players like Tawanda Nyamandwe, Hillary Mugoniwa and Tendai Ngulube are said to be on a club hunting mission following the expiry of their Monoz contracts.

Monomotapa has however, captured former Gunners striker Ismael Lawe while returning the services of influential skipper Kuda Musharu, who signed a new three-year contract. - Godknows Matarutse
