Fungisai snubs Shingisai

HARARE - Gospel diva Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave snubbed Shingisai Suluma’s welcome party concert in the capital on December 29 because she claims to be bigger than Suluma, organisers say.

Red Rose Entertainment director Barbara Chikosi (Mama Red Rose) said Fungisai who recently launched her ninth album WeNyasha NdeWenyasha in Harare told her that she no longer felt comfortable to share the stage with the American-based songstress because of the poster layout.

“She was unhappy with the way we designed our poster. On the poster, Shingisai’s picture was bigger than hers, a development which did not go down well with her (Fungisai).

“Fungisai is claiming to be bigger than Mai Suluma in popularity, maybe that was the reason why she snubbed the event,” said Chikosi.

The Red Ross Entertainment director said Fungisai approached her seeking an opportunity to perform at the welcome party but only to pullout after the poster was printed.

“She (Fungisai) complained about the poster asking why Shingisai’s picture was bigger than hers yet she (Fungisai) commands a huge following in the country.

“She then told me that because of these reasons she was not going to be part of the cast,” said Chikosi.
Contacted for comment, the Makomborero hit-maker said she was not at liberty to divulge the reasons behind her move.

“I do not have any comment, contact organisers of the show, they have answers to your questions,” she said.

To add fuel to the fire, Fungisai allegedly called Mama Red Rose fuming after being contacted by the Daily News. Mama Red Rose could only describe the message as scary.

Suluma was not at liberty to reveal Fungisai’s reasons and she directed all the questions to the event organisers and Fungisai.

“Fungisai told me that she was not going to perform at the event. She stated reasons which I am not at liberty to reveal but I think if you contact Mai Red Rose and Fungisai you will get your answers,” said Suluma.

On the same day, Fungisai performed at the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) organised Victoria Falls Carnival.

However, Fungisai’s absence did not disrupt the concert at the Harare International Conference Centre. It is not the first time that Fungisai has courted controversy. She started performing in night clubs and when people attacked her, she defended her actions.

She swore she would continue performing in night clubs as people there were also in need of gospel.
However, she later backtracked saying she would stop due reasons between her and her God. - Kaleen Gombera
