Mukamba left out of Dynamos squad

HARARE - Dynamos have included nine new players for their 25-man African Champions League squad with midfield magician Denver Mukamba omitted from the list after it emerged the midfield wizard is on the verge of completing his switch to South African club Bidvest Wits.

Mukamba, who had an outstanding season with the Glamour Boys and was crowned Soccer Star of the Year last week, has been a target of Wits for months.

Compiling the final list has not been easy for DeMbare as most local clubs were reluctant to release their players to the country’s sole representatives in next year’s continental competitions.

The registration deadline expired last Saturday midnight and any player registered afterwards will now attract a fine of $500 to the club.

Dynamos will play Lesotho Correctional Services in the preliminary round in February next year, but afterwards, the draw will get tougher.

Should they manage to pass the Lesotho test, Pasuwa’s men will meet the winner between either Libyan champions Al-Ittihad or Tunisian outfit CA Bizertin.

The 19 times Zimbabwean champions will then have to clear a second round hurdle posed by reigning African champions Al-Ahly to make it to the group stages.

Although the Glamour Boys could not reveal names of players registered for Champions League, the Daily News has established the nine new players are goalkeepers Artwell Mukanda, signed from Monomotapa, and national Under-17 goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva, have been captured.

Also included in the Dynamos squad are the former Monoz duo of Obey Mwerahari and Russel Madamombe as well as the Hwange pair of defender Aaron Katebe and forward Francesco Zikumbawire, Morris Kadzola from Motor Action, Chicken Inn’s Sydney Linyama and former CAPS United midfielder Stephen Alimenda.

Mukandi was outstanding for Monomotapa in the just-ended domestic season and will fight for the Dynamos number one jersey with George Chigova, who also extended his stay at the club for another two years.

Kadzola and Katebe have been brought in to stabilise the defence that already boasts the outstanding pair of Gift Bello and Patson Jaure.

The club’s engine room, which already has the creative skills of Tichaona Mabvura, Cliff Sekete, and Tawanda Muparati, will further be strengthened by Madamombe’s arrival.

It is the absence of Mukamba which has left a huge void in the Dynamos team with the player’s manager, Gibson Mahachi, confirming yesterday that country’s finest footballer will leave the Glamour Boys in South Africa’s January mid-season transfer window.

“He is likely to be going to Bidvest Wits anytime and talks are at an advanced stage to conclude a deal,” said Mahachi.

Veteran midfielder Desmond Maringwa, defenders George Magariro and David Kutyauripo were all left out of the squad as they are reportedly on their way out of the club.

Also left out in the cold is midfielder Timire Mamvura.
