Dynamos await Champions League draw

HARARE - Zimbabwe champions Dynamos will know their African Champions League first round opponents when the Confederation of African Football (Caf) releases the 2013 early rounds draws tomorrow.

Dynamos will be the country’s sole representative in continental football next year after Monomotapa and Chicken Inn withdrew for different reasons.

Monomotapa declined to compete in the African Safari owing to financial constraints whilst Chicken Inn cited inexperience as their reason. Both were earmarked for the second tier Confederation Cup.

Highlanders, who finished second in the just ended 2012 season, are serving a three-year ban from continental football after they pulled out of the Caf Confederation Cup last year, though the club could receive a lifeline when the Caf Bureau of Interclubs Committee meets this weekend.

Usually, the Caf’s first round draw takes into account the geographical closeness of teams to try and keep down costs.

This means there is no open draw conducted in a formal ceremony and Dynamos can expect to play against an opponent from a nearby country in their first round outing.

The draw must be approved by Caf’s executive committee, who meet in Cairo this weekend, and will then be released by the organisation.

This is scheduled to happen tomorrow.

The competition is billed to start in February, just one week after the completion of the African Nations Cup finals in South Africa.

The first rounds of the first-leg ties are played on the weekends of February 15 to 17, with the return legs a fortnight later on the weekend of March 1 to 3.

Home clubs can choose whether they want to play on Friday, Saturday or Sunday but must fix the date a fortnight ahead.
