Matenda clinches Midlands ticket for Jikinya finals

GWERU - Matenda Primary School’s fourth consecutive Midlands Jikinya Dance Festival title at the weekend has earned them the right to represent the province in the Jikinya national finals in Harare on November 24.

Matenda beat seven other schools from the province’s eight districts at Mberengwa’s Chegato Mission last Friday.

The Zvishavane-based school, which has failed to win the national title in previous years, will be hoping for better luck this time around when they enter into the national finals for the fourth time in a row.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe manager for Midlands, Abigail Sivanda, hailed the dance contest as an important facet of cultural preservation.

“I am pleased because the schools are playing important roles as cultural ambassadors”, said Sivanda.
“We are also pleased with the very high standards of the competitions at this level as National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (Nacz).

Schools in Midlands have tremendously improved in mastering the Amabhiza set-pieces.

The national traditional dance fiesta will this year run under the theme — Dance for Zimbabwe, Dance for life.

The national primary schools competition, which is now in its 10th year and involves all the country’s 10 provinces, is sponsored by Delta Beverages. -
