'Shuga Shuga is a liar'

HARARE - Son of the late sungura musician Ketai Muchawaya, has labelled Shuga Shuga a liar after he failed to fulfil his promises.

Shuga Shuga had promised to help the young Muchawaya in his musical career since both artistes share the same source of inspiration —Ketai of Simba Brothers.

Speaking to the Daily News recently Shuga Shuga whose real name is Taruvinga Manjokota said he wishes to promote the youngster as a way of expressing his gratitude to the late legend, Ketai.

“I really appreciate great works of Mukoma Ketai and I do not want to see his legacy experience a natural death and for this reason I want his son to perform as an opening act at all my concerts,” he said.

Muchawaya said Manjokota is a liar.

“Shuga Shuga is only good at promising but he will never fulfil his promises. He promised us this deal way back when we introduced ourselves into showbiz industry but up to now nothing materialised,” said Muchawaya.

Recently Shuga Shuga opened up to the Daily News that poverty is doing injustice to him.

“Since I started this music career in early 2000, I have nothing to show of it,” he said.

However, Muchawaya said he is planning a massive kick start next year.

“Instead of waiting for somebody, we are promising a resounding start next year since we have learnt one or two skills in the music industry,” said Muchawaya.

Muchawaya 28, is taking it up from where his father left.

“We are taking it from where mdhara (father) left. We are working with Craig ‘‘Bob’’ Nhekairo, one of the surviving members of the original Simba Brothers, he is a bassist.

“Next year we will leave no stone unturned, we are going to criss-cross the country holding live shows where we will play both the old songs of the Simba brothers and ours,” said Muchawaya.

The original Simba Brothers came from the defunct Kasongo band which came into the limelight with tracks like Chitepo and Kuguta kushanda in early the 1980s.

Like the now defunct Ilanga band which is recognised for producing crème de la crème of artistes, the likes of Don Gumbo, Andy Brown, Busi Ncube among other musicians, Kasongo band has also produced legends.

Zuva nezuva, Mandivengerei, Dai uriwe, Shinga and Mandibaya are some of the tracks from the popular Simba Brothers. - Vasco Chaya
