Pokello: Zim's own Kim Kardashian?

HARARE - Pokello Nare exudes an aura of beauty and glamour consistent with a spoilt princess.

Yet, she is not a princess neither is she spoilt.

Instead, she has an unflinching confidence and air of superiority which call for recognition in the lukewarm Zimbabwe fashion industry.

During the Miss Global Zimbabwe competition, I had an opportunity of meeting Pokello Nare, and oh, what a sight!

She was flaunting a short blue dress. Pokello looked so fair, it was settling.

From top to bottom, the colour of her skin was the same and I wondered what type of lotions she applied and whether these were locally found.

I looked at her as she strutted into the Jacaranda room exhibiting confidence and a poised figure.
She walked straight with her head slightly tilted back as if camera ready, revealing a confident face and I could not help but marvel at her skin.

She was wearing “killer” high heels that dared anyone.

By just walking in them successfully across the room, she exuded sureness that was unrivalled.
It was like she was on the cat walk.

It struck me again that she was conscious that all eyes were on her and she took up the opportunity.

As she sat down in her skimpy dress, she made a show of trying to sit properly that also sends male on-lookers “crazy”.

She was seated on the front row, a reserved seat that allowed her a nice peak at what was going on and in the process giving her enough exposure.

Later, her man, Urban Grooves prodigy, Stunner came in and performed.

All was well.

She stood up and danced at some juncture before dumping the dance floor for her vantage seat.

I was seated opposite Pokello with the stage separating us.

I wanted to have a peep at her face to see whether she really possessed beauty and good mannerisms.

I resisted the urge to walk across to engage her in a conversation, just to gauge her aptitude.

After watching Pokello for some time, I mused that she represented a powerful young lady who knew exactly what she liked.

I chuckled thinking whether I could liken her to Kim Kardashian, the American reality TV star now attached to Kanye West.

Maybe she could be our own Zimbabwean Kim, I wondered in my soliloquy.

The obvious similarity was that both women are stylish and fashion conscious. They also work for their money.

Granted, something seems to come for free for the richly endowed on body structure and beauty but I guess it is a job to keep squeaky clean daily.

Kim set trends on the fashion scene and Pokello also set trends in Zimbabwe.

I would wear a pair of shoes that Pokello wore or even her dresses as much as I would follow Kim.

Pokello, with her shoe shop at Borrowdale Sam Levy’s Village sells “hot” shoes, puts in a lot of work to have the best merchandise at competitive prices.

It takes a girl with brains to calculate that and also to manage her own image.

Last year, our sister paper, the Daily News, published that Pokello is a proud owner of over 200 pairs of personal shoes and does not get out of the house without high heels, even to fetch items at the supermarket.

Pokello has attracted controversy in the same way she has found her way to the hearts of fashion enthusiasts.

Last year she was “shamed” in a video suggesting steamy sex between her and Stunner.

While it went viral on the social networks and had tongues wagging, her love towards Stunner was “strengthened”.

Kim was also involved in a hot tape which showed her romping with Ray Jay.

Away from the sordid stories of the other side of showbiz, the story of Pokello is that of a young Zimbabwean fashionista who is in a cage.

There is need for more platforms for her to exercise the creative fashion.

She can really dazzle at any function.

Like Kim, she should be having many endorsements for perfumes and clothing lines to make sure she makes real money to flaunt more.

Reality television has taken the world by storm and Africa’s version of Big Brother has been well received.

Maybe this is the time to have our own reality series in Zimbabwe and have a piece of the cake.

As I looked at Pokello leaving, I wondered whether she can be our real Kim and whether the creative industry would want to embrace her.

Kim is currently being seen with Kanye West and she has her benefits from that relationship.

Pokello has been hanging with Stunner for sometime and I think they can make their association more powerful by entering the BBA reality show together.
