Traditional healer gets 8 years for sodomy

HARARE - A Harare magistrate has jailed a traditional healer who forced a 26-year-old man to sodomise him and ejaculate in his mouth.

The traditional healer, who had claimed the sexual act would save the victim’s marriage, went further to promise the man a suit as part of goodies for the act.

Regional magistrate Simon Rogers Kachambwa sentenced Stephen Chikambure to eight years in prison after convicting him on aggravated indecent charges.

The magistrate, however, suspended five years on condition of good behaviour for the next five years.

“He is a traditional healer who used his profession to instil fear into the complainant that he had supernatural powers derived from being possessed by water mermaids to make complainant his wife and went on to dehumanise him,” said Kachambwa.

He said the complainant, whom we cannot name to protect his identity, had been “traumatised” by the act. The complainant told the court Chikambure had promised him a commuter omnibus, a suit and a graduation gown for providing the services.

Prosecutors told the court Chikambure of Chitungwiza was invited by the complainant’s family in Domboshawa to carry out some rituals.

After the event, Chikambure and the complainant returned to Harare, while the victim’s wife remained in the village.

The court heard the pair went to the complainant’s house, where they shared a single room.

Chikambure started sucking the complainant’s privates, caressing his nipples and kissing him at around 11pm, the court was told.

During the same night, Chikambure forced the man to sodomise him after removing his trousers.

He asked the complainant to ejaculate in his mouth, the court heard. - Tendai Kamhungira
