Sports Club eye double

HARARE - Recently crowned National Rugby League (NRL) champions Harare Sports Club will aim to complete a season’s double this afternoon when they host the final leg of the Spar Sevens Summer Series.

Three thousand dollars is up for grabs for the team that wins the series.

HSC head into these weekend fixtures with their noses in front after winning last weekend’s leg at Newlands, where they beat bitter rivals Old Georgians in the finals 19-07.

HSC have a good arsenal in such players as Daniel Hondo, Tangai Nemadire, Shayne Makombe and Stephen Hunduza.

Judging by the form book, on paper HSC are hot favourites to clinch the series, but however, Old Georgians can spoil their party if they bring their A game plan.

They have equally good players in their ranks such as Zimbabwe Sevens captain Jacques Leitao, who has amazing running lines.

Justine Coles, who is a great finisher given little a sniff of space, can be a nightmare for the opposition. It is poised to be an exciting finale.

“The standards of Sevens rugby have improved, the Sevens structures in the country got better and we had good performances from sides such as Mutare and Police, which is a step in the right direction,” tournament director David Crouch told the Daily News yesterday.

Crouch said the aim of the organisers was to see the tournament being hosted across the country, but these efforts were being restricted by limited funds. - Brian Matamba
