$10 000 for Mr Ugly pageant

HARARE - Harare businessman and music promoter — Biggie Chinoperekwei — has unleashed mega-sponsorship national package for this year’s Mr Ugly contest.

After his joint hosted the Harare finals of Mr Ugly — a competition for man with mean looks — the City Sports Bar proprietor has injected $10 000 into the national awards in a move set to take the competition to a new level.

If there had been flashes of those who were born without exquisite looks, perhaps appearing on the “wildlife” side, as they are often teased in a good-humoured way, the new-look Mr Ugly is set to rock.

Last year the Mr Ugly Harare gong went to Epworth-based and Dynamos fan — William Masvinu — who received $100.

That is set to change on December 31 when the increasingly popular contest holds its national finals.

Chinoperekwei told the Daily News yesterday that winners should reap rewards from their ugliness.

“We do not want a situation where we create poor celebrities like in the case of Mr Ugly Harare William Masvinu who walked away with a paltry $100.

“The winner will get a meaningful prize that will positively change his life for good,” he said.

City Sports Bar proprietor said well-wishers are welcome to sponsor the pageant since it has grown into a national event.

“We are calling for sponsors to join us to run this national event. More money will encourage potential winners to contest for the event,” he said.

“Initially the pageant was to make fun but I was shocked by the overwhelming response from fans and I find it unjust to give it a blind eye but to sponsor it,” he said.

Mr Ugly, a pageant meant to celebrate the ugliest man is hosted by David Machowa popularly known as Apama Styles.

This month Apama is expected to crown Mr Ugly Bindura before crowning others in Masvingo, Beitbridge, Kariba, Nyamapanda, Gweru and other areas.

“I have got a tight schedule on my shoulders; I have to crown more than 20 people from different places across the country before December 31.

“We are expecting to host Mr Ugly Zimbabwe finals at Holly’s Hotel in Harare but if the event gets a high turnout we will look for a bigger venue,” said Apama.

More than 25 winners from different regions are expected to elbow each other on December 31 in Harare.

Mr Ugly Harare Masvinu is optimistic he will win this national pageant.

“Ini ndinozviziva kuti ndakashata kudarika pasi pemota saka zviri pachena kuti ndinohwina kunyange paMr Ugly Africa (I know that I am ugly more than anything else and I have confidence in winning every level of Mr Ugly pageant even Mr Ugly Africa,” he said in a previous interview with the Daily News.

In Harare, Masvinu competed with four contestants, “all potential winners”: Chinotimba Admire, Derek Chavhi, Yolum Banda and Freddy Mwando.

However, only two contestants made it to the finals — Masvinhu and the runner-up Mwando.

Recently Apama was in Mutare at Pavilion Leisure Centre where he crowned Mike Nyamukapa who shrugged off stiff completion from other contestants as Mr Ugly Manicaland Province.

On October 14 Apama was in Chitungwiza where more than 28 contestants registered for the Mr Ugly Chitungwiza to be held on October 28. - Vasco Chaya
