MDC links: Teacher faces eviction

HARARE - A teacher at Magunje High School in Hurungwe West, Mashonaland West Province is being forced out of school accommodation because of her membership to mainstream MDC.

The teacher, Vanessa Ivy Muranda who teaches Accounts told the Daily News she is being victimised by the acting headmaster at the school Gideon Namaona because she is a district treasurer for Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC.

Namaona has asked Muranda to vacate the school house she occupies and seek alternative accommodation outside the school premises accusing her of putting on party T-shirts in the school premises which he says are not good for the school environment.

Muranda, however, denied ever putting on party regalia at work saying her problems are a result of political differences with the school head whom she accuses of being a diehard Zanu PF member.

She also said the headmaster is under pressure from the locals led by Zanu PF councillor for ward 10 Badwell Chasara to evict her on allegations that her husband who is MDC provincial organising secretary for Mashonaland West Province poisons the community as he also visits his wife clad in party regalia a charge she denies.

Contacted, Namaona confirmed there is a problem with the teacher over her political activities but could not give details saying the matter had been referred to the District Education Officer at Magunje.

“Yes there is a problem but I have already handed the case over to the District Officer (DEO) at Magunje so I cannot comment now,” he said.

The DEO, Ndewere’s mobile number was not reachable throughout the weekend.

Although Muranda confirmed her membership of the MDC, she flatly denied allegations that her family’s political activities poisoned the school community saying her party’s activities are never held at school and that she is being victimised by Namaona because he wants to be seen to be working by his Zanu PF bosses.

“We have never been seen by anyone putting on party T-shirts at school. They say I must not stay at the school simply because they are not comfortable staying with an MDC member since the majority of the School Development Committee members are Zanu PF together with the school head who is singing for his supper and wants to be seen to be working by his chefs.

“They are also under pressure from the local councillor Chasara who has ordered the head to evict me since he told me right in my face that he was under pressure from the councillor who visited him at the office and gave him the order.” - Mugove Tafirenyika
