Miss Universities set for Saturday

HARARE - Several beauties with brains from around the country will converge at Ochi City for the Miss Universities finals on Saturday.

The pageant commenced in 2010 and is aimed at empowering young women in universities.

Speaking to the Daily News organising secretary of the pageant, Catherine Sukuta said this year they are running under the theme, “Beauty with brains”.

“There will be different brains in the pageant with different beauties from around the country’s universities converging at Ochi City.

“We are also running campaigns on anti-prostitution and anti-abortion. It is not only a beauty pageant but we are educating the girls and reaching out to other people through the campaigns. Right now they are in boot-camp, preparing for the finals,” Sukuta said.

The participating universities include The Great Zimbabwe University, University of Zimbabwe(UZ), Chinhoyi University of Technology, Bindura University of Science Education, Africa University and Midlands State University.

“No colleges will take part; it is only open for universities. This is so because the winners are supposed to go for Miss Universities Africa, so those from colleges will not qualify. The winners will also take part in Miss Zimbabwe contest,” she said.

On Thursday there will be a talent show at Ochi City as a build up to the finals.

From the talent show the girls will be earning points which will be later used in the finals.

Artistes billed to perform include Suluman and Saiwe Chimbetu, The Born Free Crew, Shastro and others.

Last year’s Miss Universities was Ntokozo Sithole from UZ, second princess was Blessing Ngowe from Bindura University and second princess was Nyaradzo Nhongonhema also from UZ.

Following her participation at Miss Universities Africa, Sithole got three awards at the pageant held in Edo State in Nigeria.

She was among the 41 beauties from all over Africa taking place.

She got prizes for being the most determined queen, most well-behaved queen and for the best poise during the boot camp and the pageant.

Prizes up for grabs this year include a Nissan March, ipads, laptops, plasma tvs, cellphones, hampers, cash prizes and many more.

Sponsors include FBC, Goldtech, Greencard, Savannah, Take2, Forester Security, Tynserv Distributors and others.

The Miss Universities pageant’s taking place shows that different licence holders are already preparing for the Miss Zimbabwe finals.

A question however, on people’s minds is: Will Miss Zimbabwe trust be able to hold the pageant following the challenges it faced last time?
