Gang robs police officer of pistol

HARARE - Three men who allegedly robbed a Masvingo police officer of his service pistol before pouncing on nine different people in one night have appeared before a Harare magistrate.

The alleged robbers are, Tinei Chimucheka (22) of Dotito Mt Darwin, Athanas Munyonga (33) of Gutu. They are believed to have committed the crimes together with William Audius Takundwa who reportedly suffered mental challenges, weeks after the robberies.

They allegedly committed the crime with Luckmore Chibira and Vincent Didy who are still at large.

According to state papers, the gang went on a robbery spree during the night of February 11 this year in Mvurwi, Centenary, Mt Darwin, Madziva Mine and Glen View 2, Harare.

The two men, who appeared before Harare regional magistrate Fadzai Mthombeni last week, denied committing the armed robbery crimes.

Prosecutor Allan Goche told the court the gang connived and boarded a bus to Mvurwi.

They disembarked from the bus along the way and posed as genuine commuters, before they were picked up by Stewart Ndoro.

According to state papers, one of the men produced a pistol, pointed it at Ndoro while the others cut off seat belts to tie his hands and legs, before blindfolding him using his shirt.

One of the men took charge of the vehicle and drove for 300 metres into the bush off Mvurwi Road, where they allegedly tied him on a tree trunk and disappeared with his car.

They allegedly drove Ndoro’s vehicle to Centenary, Mt Darwin, Madziva Mine and Glen View 2 during the night of February 17 and committed a spate of armed robberies after attacking nine different victims.

The men were arrested six days later after police received a tip-off.

They will be back in court for trial continuation on Thursday this week. - Tendai Kamhungira
