Sunshine Boys get their revenge

HARARE - Harare City handed FC Platinum their second consecutive home defeat with a 1-0 win at Mandava Stadium yesterday.

The Sunshine Boys inflicted revenge on the platinum miners, who beat them 4-1 in the reverse league fixture in Harare before crashing out of the Mbada Diamonds Cup in the first round at the hands of the Zvishavane side.

Yesterday, Harare City chose Platinum’s home ground to get back at the flamboyant side with a vintage performance that was aided by vengeful Shabanie Mine supporters, who have a tendency of supporting every team that plays against Platinum at home.

Crybert Muvuti scored the all-important goal in the 27th minute when he coolly slotted past Platinum goalkeeper Francis Tizayi from close range.

The municipality-run team won a throw-in inside Platinum’s half and from the resultant throw, Muvuti controlled the ball with his left foot before escaping the attention of his marker to shoot past Tizayi.

“It is a sweet victory for us because FC Platinum humiliated us in Harare and booted us out of the Mbada Diamonds Cup,” said City coach Bigboy Mawiwi.

“We came here with a positive mindset and I am glad that we achieved a good result.”

After the breather, Platinum upped the tempo of their game, with Mitchell Katsvairo and Benjamin Marere getting to the end of numerous chances but were denied by the impressive City keeper Maxwell Nyamupanedengu, who constantly kept them at bay.

Platinum coach Tendai Chikuni was left to rue a glut of missed chances in the second half.

“We had our fare of chances but we failed to utilise them and if that happens, surely you can’t win a football game,” said Chikuni. - Sports Writer
