Rapist jailed for 33 years

HARARE - A Harare man who raped his deceased elder brother’s 22-year-old daughter was jailed for 33 years at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.

Gilbert Jacob, 29, who was facing three counts of rape, was found guilty on all counts by magistrate Sandra Mpindu.

Eight years were suspended on condition that Jacob does not commit any related offence within five years of his release.

Circumstances are that on December 23, 2010, the girl was asked to stay with Jacob’s brother Samuel during Christmas holidays.

At home she found her three other uncles (Jacob’s brothers) including Jacob preparing to go for Christmas holiday at their rural home.

However, Jacob did not go with his brothers but remained behind intending to go the following morning.
That day the girl slept in the dining-room as Jacob had gone out for a drink. When he returned during the night he raped the girl.

The girl did not tell anyone as she was an orphan and Jacob was her guardian.

Sometime in August last year the girl visited Jacob’s brother again and found Jacob there.

Jacob raped the girl during the night. The matter came to light when the girl posted about the sexual offence on her Facebook wall. She later appeared on Tilda Moyo’s programme on radio (Studio 7) asking for help.

A police report was then filed leading to Jacob’s arrest. - Ivan Zhakata
