Kereke seeks $25m defamation damages

HARARE - Munyaradzi Kereke, former advisor to Reserve Bank governor Gideon Gono, is seeking $25 million in defamation damages over a series of stories that appeared in the Daily News and Daily News on Sunday in which a 13-year-old girl is accusing him of raping her two years ago.

The defamation suit against the Daily News seeks $25 million in punitive damages and was filed in the Harare High Court on Tuesday, according to court papers.

The stories, which were published in the leading daily newspaper, allege Kereke raped a minor girl at gunpoint  while his wife was allegedly cooking in the kitchen.

Kereke has denied the allegations.

The stories centre around the girl’s cry for justice, and her petition to police chief Augustine Chihuri and Attorney General Johannes Tomana seeking a written a confirmation why Kereke has not been arraigned before the courts to answer the rape allegations.
