Car thief gets 16 years

HARARE - A car thief from Domboshawa area has been jailed 16 years for stealing two vehicles.

Last Chamangwana appeared before regional magistrate Simon Rogers Kachambwa facing two counts of theft and was jailed for eight years in prison on each count.

Kachambwa, however, suspended five years of the sentence on condition Chamangwana does not commit a related offence during that period.

The court heard on November 29 last year, Chamangwana teamed up with Tinashe Matinyenga and Blessing Mupamombe and connived to steal in Charlotte Brooke in Harare’s Borrowdale suburb.

The trio boarded a commuter omnibus and proceeded to one Munyaradzi Joseph Nziraimhandu’s residence in Charlotte Brooke where they saw a locked Mazda truck parked at the house.

Chamangwana entered the yard, forced-open the car’s door and “hot-wired” the vehicle before driving away.
Using the same modus operandi, the crew teamed up again on December 20 last year and went to Sally Mugabe Heights in Harare where they stole a Toyota Hiace belonging to John Gatabazi.

The trio used a screwdriver to unlock the vehicle, the court heard.

Chamangwana was arrested in March this year following a tip- off. Matinyenga has been acquitted on the charges. Mupamombe is on the run.
