Lets emulate Mbada diamonds

HARARE - Zimbabwe's richest knockout football competition, the Mbada Diamonds Cup has been unveiled and we applaud the sponsors, Mbada Diamonds for showing all other companies what corporate responsibility is all about.

Over the years, Mbada Diamonds has been leading the way in terms of corporate social responsibility as they have been involved in scholarships, infrastructure development, housing development, health support, donations to the underprivileged and bursaries among others.

This is on top of facts on the ground which indicate that Mbada Diamonds is the only diamond mining company that is meeting its national responsibility of surrendering money to Treasury.

We have five diamond mining companies in Chiadzwa and most of them are failing to support government but simply lining personal pockets at the expense of the nation.

Finance minister Tendai Biti, day in day out complains that diamond mining companies except Mbada Diamonds are not giving money to Treasury.

For Mbada Diamonds to sponsor football like they have done with the millions they will spend on the Mbada Diamonds Cup, it takes a lot of sacrifice and in this regard, we call on football administrators, clubs and the players to be professional in their approach towards this tournament.

This professional approach should apply to not only to the Mbada knockout tournament but to every match played in the country so that sponsorship can continue to pour into the beautiful game of football.

Mbada Diamonds has done its part and now it’s up to the football authorities to ensure that this tournament is well run. We don’t want anarchy in the tournament like unnecessary abandonments of matches and the reckless action of taking football matters to court.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) must come up with strict rules and regulations to save the tournament from total chaos.

Last year’s Mbada Cup was a success and we pray that this year, it will even be better.

We believe that PSL boss Twine Phiri has the experience, skill and tenacity to stage one of the most memorable football tournaments ever witnessed in the country. Phiri must ensure that in organising this important tournament, he must take into consideration all the concerns by the sponsors.

We call upon other companies to emulate the generous gesture shown by Mbada Diamonds to support our football.

We also call upon the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) to fully support the PSL in staging the Mbada Diamonds knockout competition.
