Man gets 10 years for stealing copper cables

HARARE - For stealing Telone copper cables (drop wires), a Harare man was sentenced to 10 years in prison at the Harare Magistrates’ Court.

Steven Chitsomba, 31, appeared before Harare regional magistrate Don Ndirowei facing contravention of section 84 (4) (c) of the Criminal Law amendment (Protection of Power, Communication and Water Infrastructure) Act.

Magistrate Ndirowei sentenced Chitsomba to an effective 10 years.

On August 26 this year, Marume Nhasiluma who was guarding Telone poles at Prospect area in Waterfalls, Harare saw Chitsomba carrying some suspicious bags around the area.

According to state papers, he ordered him to stop but he ran away.

Nhasiluma gave chase until he eventually caught Chitsomba.

Upon being searched Chitsomba was found with drop wires which he failed to give a satisfactory explanation leading to his arrest.

The recovered drop wires weighed 20 kilogrammes and were worth $200.
