Senior prosecutor arrested

HARARE - Police have arrested a senior prosecutor for allegedly demanding $400 bribe from suspects.
Simon Tapiwa, who is the senior public prosecutor at Karoi Magistrates’ Courts, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon following a tip-off that he had demanded money from suspects accused of transporting ivory.

Plain clothes policemen pounced on the unsuspecting Tapiwa during lunch hour.

He was still in police custody yesterday as investigations were underway.

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the arrest.

“I can confirm that Karoi area prosecutor Tapiwa is in custody as he demanded $400 to release the car that police impounded during a court case,” Mabgweazara said.

“The case was cleared by the courts but there were demands made by the prosecutor resulting in a trap being set up,” he said.

“Investigations are underway and he will appear in court soon,” said Mabgweazara.
