HARARE - Norman Mapeza is expected to get a vote of confidence during the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) board meeting today despite the Warriors’ failure to qualify for the 2012 African Nations Cup finals.

The Zifa board will review all the technical appointments for the national teams.

Mapeza has already received support from Sports Minister David Coltart.

In an interview with the Daily News this week, Coltart praised Mapeza for doing a “superb job” in difficult circumstances.

The former Warriors captain will also have Zifa president Cuthbert Dube fighting in his corner in the crucial meeting that will review the failed qualifying campaign of the on-going Afcon finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

According to Zifa sources, the board will retain Mapeza for the forthcoming 2014 World Cup and 2013 Afcon qualifiers set to start next month.

Zimbabwe will take on Burundi in the preliminary round of the 2013 Afcon qualifiers on February 29.

Mapeza has weathered the storm after his appointment sparked controversy in 2010 when the Zifa board opted to give Belgian Tom Seintfiet the job ahead him.

Seintfiet lasted just a few days and was controversially deported for working without a valid work permit before Zimbabwe’s opening Afcon qualifier at home to Cape Verde.

A seriously divided Warriors team, split in loyalty between joint coaches Mapeza and Madinda Ndlovu, took to the field and played out a dull goalless draw with the islanders.

Ultimately that draw was one of the results that hampered the team’s progress from Group A.

Zifa boss Cuthbert Dube finally flexed his muscles last March when he took up the decision to give Mapeza sole control of the team.

The meeting will also discuss progress on the final phase of the Asiagate match-fixing investigations.

An initial report from the Ahmed Ebrahim-led ethics committee, appointed late last year to conduct hearings and determine punishment for those found guilty, will be presented before the board.
