HARARE - Monte Cassino Secondary School in Mashonaland East Province produced the best Zimbabwe Schools Examination (Zimsec) November 2013 Ordinary Level results, recording a 100 percent pass rate.

At least 82 candidates sat for the exam.

Perched between two mountain ranges some seven kilometres South-East of Macheke, Monte Cassino is a girls-only Catholic boarding school.

The school was founded as part of the Catholic Mission at Monte Cassino in 1902 and has flourished over the years, establishing a rock solid reputation of academic excellence.

In 2012, the school featured in the Top 10 for both A’ and O’ levels, coming out placed at position 9 and 7 respectively.

Gweru-based Anderson Secondary School, where 69 candidates sat for the examination, came second, recording a 97, 1 percent pass rate.

Completing the Top 10 are Zimbabwe Republic Police High School (96,58 percent), John Tallach Secondary School (96,15) Nyanga High School, the best performer in 2012 ( 96 percent, St Ignatius College (95,95),  Nyazura Adventist (94,63),  Regina Mundi Secondary School (93,75) St Dominics (Chishawasha) Secondary (93,26) and Kriste Mambo Secondary School (92,31).

The total number of candidates who sat for five subjects and above was 173 856.

Candidates who passed five subjects and above with a Grade C or better were 36 031.

The overall pass rate for November 2013 was 20,72 percent, a 2,32 percent increase from November 2012 pass rate of 18,4 percent.

Esau Nhandara, the Zimsec director  said November results had been dispatched to Zimsec regional offices countrywide and thanked those who took part in the marking as well as Zimsec staff for their commitment and dedication to duty.

He said female students had a percentage pass rate of 18, 51 percent while their male counterparts registered 27,41 percent, a difference of 8,9 percent.

The percentage difference between males and females has increased by 4 percent.

"Zimsec is notifying examination centres, candidates, parents, guardians and all other stakeholders that the November 2013 Ordinary Level results are out and have been dispatched to Zimsec regional offices," said Nhandara.

Church ran schools dominate the list. And in future, it will be interesting to also publish the least performing schools. That way, parents can be well informed when they decide which schools to send their children. It also instil competition.

The bottom line these results are pathetic and disappointing, an overall pass rate of 21% shows that Zim education has gone to the dogs. I do not see the reason why the 100 Schools listed above should not record a 100% pass rate at "O" level considering that they select the best learners for Form one.

Udofo - 13 February 2014

@Mukora kwafamombe the elite schools dnt write cambridge, plus they practical and vane mari dzavo havasweri vachiita zvekufa nebhuku yet eres a real world out ere that needs practical solutions!there is a difference in been intelligent and thinking,hw many graduates come out of our universities but kufunga zero this is the root of our problem towards economic development we nid to gel practical and theory kwete kufa nebhuku so u work for someone!

Some schools are producing best results because they don't have day-scholars. Day scholars will definitely lower the pass rate because of the conditions they do their studies. We can take for example Gokomere High school with a candidature of 241 and Monte Cassino with 82. Gokomere has more dayscholars as compared to Monte Cassino which has no day scholars. When ranking these schools it must therefore be taken into account this factor. We cannot such schools are not very good.

Most of these schools only take students who have done well in their in takes. So its garbage in garbage out. Secondly some school do open papers ahead of exams.

Next time introduce columns per school by subject so as to push individual teachers to compete for quality than quantity alone...8As, 1B, 1D (90%) is better quality than 5As,5Cs (100%)
