Gumbura wives' porn trial opens

HARARE - Eight women from Robert Martin Gumbura’s Independent End Time Message Church yesterday told a Harare magistrate that they took nude pictures of themselves, which were produced in court as exhibits, “for fun and personal consumption”.

Choice Neganye, 32, Amadeus Mutakwa, 32, Rutendo Sekai Mandiya, 28, Pamela Kandawire, 27, Runyararo Musvosvi, 27, Veronica Mbanga, 27, Tendai Kwatara, 34 and Moreblessing Takawira, 35, through their lawyer Rekai Maposa, denied contravening the Censorship Act.

It is the State’s case that the eight women, who include Gumbura’s wives, were found in possession of several pornographic materials.

According to their defence outline, the allegations were propelled by Gumbura’s adversaries, who would like to make sure that he goes to prison with his wives.

Gumbura is facing multiple rape charges and is awaiting his judgment on January 24.

Maposa told the court that the women took each other’s photographs for fun and personal consumption and never disseminated the pictures to anyone, adding that the allegations were malicious.

“Gumbura’s other wives were accused of collaborating with Gumbura directly or indirectly in the rape matter against their husband in an endeavour to blackmail the entire family, and if not sending the entire family to prison, such that Gumbura’s homestead will be closed forever and be a thing of the past,” Maposa said.

Tichavengwa Robson Sengwe, the investigating officer, told the court that they went to Gumbura’s premises after getting reports that the pastor was abusing women and children and was recording the orgies.

Prosecutor Michael Reza produced copies of photographs, believed to be part of the women, parading their naked bodies. The pictures show the women striking different poses, while naked.

According to state papers, the women were allegedly found in possession of 16 pornographic DVDs and 57 photographs of the women posing nude, following a police raid.

The women were arrested after police officers received information claiming incidences of child abuse at number 6 Helena Close, Marlborough, Harare, the court heard.

saka munhu akazviona ari oga mumbamke akashama ane mhosva ka yekuwona munhu ari nide. some of our prosecutions absolutely lack research and are merely meant to victimise a person even in his privacy. There ought to be boundaries on these issues
