Botswana faults Zim election, calls for audit

GABORONE - Botswana called on Monday for an independent audit of Zimbabwe’s disputed vote last week, saying the elections could not be considered acceptably free and fair in the regional southern African community.

The statement from the government in Gaborone contrasted sharply with the unqualified endorsement given by South Africa’s president, Jacob Zuma, of the July 31 polls which re-elected veteran Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe, 89.

Mugabe’s main rival, Morgan Tsvangirai, is challenging the result as a fraud. Gaborone’s assessment also revealed differing views within the 15-nation Southern African Development Community (Sadc) whose members include South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

Observers from Botswana were part of a Sadc team which monitored the Zimbabwean presidential and parliamentary polls.

The Botswana government said that although the election day itself had been “free of overt intimidation and violence”, there was evidence that the electoral process was undermined by a number of irregularities.

“There is no doubt that what has been revealed so far by our observers cannot be considered as an acceptable standard for free and fair elections in Sadc,” it said.

On Sunday, Zuma had called the Zimbabwean elections “successful” and said the Sadc observers had reported the outcome “to be the will of the people”.

In contrast, the United States has said it does not believe the vote was credible and the European Union has also expressed concern over alleged serious flaws.

That nephew of the royal family, he is an open moth shut mind again. Chipangano can deal with that country, the government should not waste time on a rat.

People of God, let us not get fooled by these election results. The unemployment rate in Zim has skyrocketed like never before and poverty has become a major portion for the majority. As a result right thinking individuals would not have voted in support of Zanu PF.The electoral process was tempered with,no doubt! GOMS

Edmond Gomani - 6 August 2013

guys we sponsored our own election withot a pen from bots or whoever. regional and continental blocks endorsed the elections and so is MdC polling agents at all polling stations. so hw on earth does khama fits in in all his negativity and how on earth will polls ever be rigged when all contesting parties concurred with the counting of ballots cast. lets not just be opposite for the sake of the name.....think responsibly for zim to move forward.

mukorore - 6 August 2013

Let's seperate between an election and retaintion of power. Mugabe retained power by eliminating the participation of the majority. Tsvangirai as the leader of the MDCwas outmaneuvered to participate in a non event to legitimise an illegitimate process. Therefore those congradulating Mugabe for a win that never was, are doing so on the basis that he managed to out class Tsvangirai on fooling Zimbabweans and the world that they were going for an election. While the Leader of the MDC is to take responsibility of not seeing this trick coming hence take temedial steps and advising the people, he can also be exonerated for he is an honest man who is a firm believer in trust, honest and straight forwardness

Even if there is a re-run of the mock election at the end of the year or next year or in 2020 civilian parties will always lose to ZanuPF military dictatorship because the military in Zimbabwe is ZanuPF and ZanuPF is the military. Can Zimbabweans not see this very obvious anomaly? How many times have the MDCs tried and failed?

Chin - 6 August 2013

President Zuma of R.S.A has joined the band wagon of praise singers for the 89 years old. It all started with the day he exonerated himself from Lindiwe Zulu's utterances. Ian Khama and his government are spot on they must not let octogenarian steal the people's vote. To hell with those who are calling for the election acceptance of the results. Why would be an exception on Zim alone let there be justice and the Zimbabweans be given a platform to choose their leaders, shame on you thieves!

Regalia - 6 August 2013

Who is Khama & his european entourage to come and dictate over our results, still deeply european owned that they see it necesary desputing what was concluded fair and credible by AFRICAN STATES MEMBERS. NONSENSE!

BOTSWANA you are right mugabe can"t be let to get away with it this time. In 2008 SADC made mugabe president . Surelly we need AUDIT of these votes someone can not defiy ELECTION RULES which he is a signatory otherwise sadc will be regarded as a dog withou teeth. BOTSWANA show mugabe that you have got TEETH. The election must be nullified and SADC must PRINT THE BALLOT PAPERS and supply all the stationery required, ZANU THIEVES must not get anyway near the VOTING STATIONERY. Please send this mail to SADC TROIKA, tell them that 31 july was not an ELECTION but a MUGBAE AND ZANU CIRCUS. The economies of SA & BOTS can not be burdend by ECONOMIC REFUGES FROM ZIMBABWE simply becoz mugabe wants to stay in power till death no, stand up for your rights BOTSWANA AND RSA . Send those refuges back here so that they can overthrow their DICTATOR by force so that we can economic opportunities here. The guilty are afraid of transparency. Included in the catalogue of unhinged incompetency Mr Mugabe's legacy is creating a kleptocratic society and the minnows who are vociferous to defend a corrupt system see themselves as next in line to pillage and rape without restrain.

Joe - 6 August 2013

They will vilify you Khama & co, call you names even though your country indirectly & directly feeds them & pay their kids school fees & medical bills etc but stand like the brave. It is the case evil triumps when good people do nothing. The cabal in zanu clearly have no descency or sense of it. Besides even if its not for altruistic reasons, a thieving, uncooth and incompetently corrupt neighbour is not good for the neighbourhood anywhere so stand firm President Khama.

Lt Gen Bravado - 6 August 2013

If SADC had only 4 like you, this region would have been more meaningful. You have a great heart with the kind of bravery anyone sane would admire. Mugabe, Zuma ... have failed this region and its common knowledge.. Thank you baba Khama. Peace loving Zimbabweans will always put you on high. Thank you!!!

EAGLE LIB - 6 August 2013

l am suprised by ZANU & its supporters they are quick to defend evil deeds that are out in the open .lf they realy know that everything was free and fair why are they afraid of an audit .This proves that they stole the elections .Relations are going to be sour with our neighbours this time around, that LOAN you were demanding from them is going to be denied. If ZANU is boosting about investment from CHINA , then it is a sad story coz CHINA sells to you not buy that is their policy. Also they bring their own labour & employ one or two people for window dressing.

Time for action Bots bring us Nato then we finish the rest. Cant afford to wake up each day disappointed over the stolen poll. Those who rise by the sword will fall by the sword

Billcrest - 6 August 2013

Billcrest you are a dog. Is that the type of democracy your puppet party preaches? If NATO comes to zimbabwe through botswana in two minutes botswana will be province of zimbabwe, and by that time you crest will be under the soil. Uri mhata chaiyo. A true hero! Who? Samson was fooled by Delilah, so in Zims we have many De lie lairs. The truth shall prevail. Mr Khama GET UP STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT.

Delilah - 7 August 2013

Oh Khama Khama. For all intents and purposes just accept defeat Ian Khama. You bet on a crippled horse. We are the very people who voted for MDC in 2008, from Zanu-PF, we have basically gone back to our roots! Ian Khama participated in the Zimbabwe Elections with his cousins in Europe and America and they lost. They had invested heavily and they lost. Damn!
