HARARE - Zimbabwean coach Wilfred Mugeyi has taken a bold and risky career step after joining serial coach-sackers Chippa United in the South African Absa Premiership yesterday.

The former Warriors forward becomes the fourth coach to be hired by the club inside the last five months after taking over from Farouk Abrahams, who left the club yesterday.

Chippa chairperson Siviwe Mpengesi is turning out to be the Jesus Gil of South African football due to his lack of tolerance for coaches.

The late Gil is the former chairperson of Spanish club Atletico Madrid, who sacked an incredible 39 managers in 16 years, including 15 in one credulity-twanging three-month period.

Even Chelsea owner Roman Abrahamovic would be proud of Mpengesi’s trigger-happy nature when it comes to hiring and firing coaches.

This season, Mpengesi has already sacked Roger Sikhakane and Julius Dube. Abrahams has become his latest victim.

Now it is the “Silver Fox” who has decided to join the list of a growing number of United coaches after joining the Cape Town-based Super Diski novices yesterday.

Mugeyi was assistant coach at neighbours Ajax Cape Town. The former Warriors striker has never taken charge of a team as head coach.

The Chilli Boys spokesman Wanda Mbenguza believes the time is right for 43-year-old to test himself at the highest level.

“Yes, I can confirm that Farouk Abrahams is no longer with the club. Wilfred Mugeyi has taken over and will be in charge of the team. Wilfred has played the game at the highest level both in the league and at international level,” Mbenguza said.

“He has significant coaching experience at Ajax Cape Town, but has never been given the chance to be the head coach. We are confident that he will rise to the challenge and be a success at Chippa United.”

Chippa are just one place off the bottom of the 16-team log with 13 points from 16 matches in their debut season in the Super Diski.

Following the announcement yesterday, social media was abuzz with comments suggesting the Zimbabwean was being set up to fail at the Chilli Boys.

“Wilfred Mugeyi shouldn't have left @ajaxcapetown for Chippa Utd! Two games down the line he will be knocking on @GeorgeComitis' (Ajax CEO) door,” tweeted Kick-Off chief writer Tiyani wa ka Mabasa.

The Times’ football writer Mazola Molefe said: “Mediocrity of extreme proportions this Chippa United. Farouk Abrahams gone after a few months in charge. Wilfred Mugeyi steps in.”

Mpengesi , though, found a few sympathisers.

“Well, Mr Mpengesi did say he's in the PSL to make history, and he might break the record for rotating the most coaches in one season,” tweeted Balo Tukwayo.

“What Chippa Mpengesi is doing is very laudable. He's giving as many coaches as possible top-flight experience. While he can, of course.”

It remains to be seen whether Mugeyi will last the season or will be next on the firing line.
