HARARE - Top Seed Takanyi Garanganga enjoyed a convincing straight-sets win over Botswana’s Matong Phenyo to progress to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Twenty Third Centuries International Futures tournament.
The All-Africa Games gold medallist maintained his unbeaten record at the tournament by dismantling Matong 6-0, 6-0.
Garangaga will now face Lukas Marsoun of Czech Republic, who beat Italy’s Virlado 7-5, 6-2 in the second round to book his last eight berth.
“I thought I served really well today, much better than the first round,” the Zimbabwe Open champion said.
"I never play a person and say, ‘oh that was an easy opponent.' No, I have never done that. Everything takes some type of match and mental toughness."
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s Mark Fynn also posted straight sets win against South African Lloyd Segal 6-1, 6-4.
Fynn will now meet South African Keith Crowly, who outclassed Japan’s Adriano Quinti 6-1, 6-4 in the second round yesterday.
Zimbabwe’s Ronzai Saurombe crushed out of the tournament after he went down to American Evan Song.
Italian Emanuele Molina edged South Africa’s Anru Fourie 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 to secure her second round ticket.
Italy’s Matteo Marfia battled to overcome Czech Republic’s Ondrej Vaculick 7-6, (4), 6-7,(2) ,6-3.
