Chapungu stumbles in title race

HARARE - Promotion chasing Chapungu slumped to a surprise home 2-1 defeat to Beitbridge side Town United at Ascot Stadium in the Central Region Division One League on Sunday.

The air force Chapungu remain on third position with 29 points and a massive 12 points behind run away log leaders Tripple B.

Boasting of veteran players like Pascal Shonhai, Philip Marufu and Mathew Mahala, the Gweru-based side have been blowing hot and cold this season.

The defeat to Town United means they lost further ground to try and close the gap on Tripple B.

Tripple B continued with their quest for winning promotion into the Castle Lager Premiership with a 3-1 win over New Zimsteel at Dulibadzimu stadium on Saturday.

Their nearest rivals FC Strikers had their match against Airstars postponed after the Kwekwe side were involved in a road accident on their way to Beitbridge.

The accident claimed the life of one of their coaches, Latson Rusike, who was killed on the spot.

Chrome stars are slowly making their way up the ladder with another convincing win after thrashing Hwahwa 4-0 at the weekend.

Silo United were also big winners at the weekend with a 4-0 win over struggling army side Tongogara.

Gwanda-based side Vumbachikwe are slowly slipping out of the title race and are down to seventh place after drawing 0-0 with FC Platinum Under-19 at Mandava Stadium.

Bottom placed Blanket Mine drew 2-2 with fellow relegation candidates Jessie mine while Midlands State University did not play as they were on a bye.
