HARARE - The Zimbabwe Sevens rugby franchise, in partnership with Bakers’ Inn, will on Wednesday launch the “Bakers’ Inn Legacy programme” aimed at promoting rugby in local junior schools.

Over 900 children from selected junior schools across the country are set to benefit from the six months initiative that has been tailored around the Spar Cheetahs’ journey to the Rugby World Cup in Moscow at the end of June this year.

Apart from providing enjoyment to a number of children in the next six months, the course of the programme will also see Gilbert Nyamutsamba’s men coach children, donate playing equipment to schools as well as identify talent for the future.

The talent that is identified will then be further nurtured with more intensive coaching sessions at training camps at the end of the month.

“The programme seeks to leave a positive impact in the communities of Zimbabwe, during the team’s journey to the World Cup at the end of June this year, with the view of leaving a legacy for years to come,” Zimbabwe Sevens rugby said in a press statement.

“With Sevens rugby growing in popularity all around the world as well as the sports inclusion in the Olympics, there is keen focus on growing the popularity of the sport in Zimbabwe.

With the strong support of Bakers’ Inn, Zimbabwe Sevens rugby will look to produce the next generation of rugby talent.”

Bakers’ Inn are currently funding the Cricket Schools of Excellence programme being run by Zimbabwe Cricket with Chipembere Primary School in Highfield as one of the development programmes. - Sports Writer
