HARARE - Seed Co has launched a football tournament in the communal area of Mhondoro in a bid to promote agriculture productivity as well as create a platform for talent identification.

The tournament, bankrolled to the tune of $6 700, will see 14 teams from across the communal zones of Mhondoro battling for honours.

That amount comprises of cash prizes as well as branded kitting for the 14 teams.

Players also received 10 kilograms each of Seed Co maize seed.

Farming workshops, which will be conducted by Agronomists and Agritex officers, will run concurrently with the tournament so as to equip players with the best farming practises.

Seed Co managing director Dennis Zaranyika said the tournament is here to stay.

“I have a vision to see successful footballers rising from Mhondoro, this tournament will be played for at least a decade,” Zaranyika said in a speech read on his behalf.

“Players must not look down on the humble beginnings; these are just stepping stones to a brighter future,” he added.

Seed Co’s public relations manager, Marjorie Mutemererwa, said this was one of many pilot projects the seed manufacturing company was embarking on as they strive to resuscitate Zimbabwe’s “bread basket of southern Africa” status.

Deputy education minister Lazurus Dokora thanked Seed Co for their contribution and had words of advice to the players and officials.

“Players, don’t sell the seed, plough it,” he said.

“Those who will be coaching should also look to attain entry level coaching courses. Even referees should undergo training.”
