HARARE - Spills and thrills will be expected when the fourth round of the Zimbabwe National Motocross Championships roar into life at Donnybrook tomorrow.
Over 80 riders from across the country are expected to converge at the home of local motorsport where all the classes from PeeWees to the MXI section will be represented.
The 13 riders who did battle for Zimbabwe at the just-ended FIM Africa Motocross Championship in Uganda last month have confirmed their participation and are likely to illuminate the fourth round of a series of six meets.
Tristan Granger, who is leading in the 50cc class after three rounds of the Championships, is tipped to continue with his good form.
Granger was crowned African champion in his class at the continental showpiece last month. He will face stiff competition from rising motocross stars like Mudiwa Chigumba and Kuda Mhene Jnr amongst others.
In the 55cc, Reagan Wasmuth has been tipped to do well in that class.
The Zvishavane-based brothers of Tafadzwa and Mike Mawarire are the riders to look out for in the 85cc.
Wade Ashwell and Reagan Wasmuth will also battle it out in the 85cc.
Tyler Mawarire and Reagan Bond will be some of the high profile riders in the 65cc class.
Jayden Ashwell, who was crowned Africa champion in MX2 class at the continental extravaganza in Kampala is favourite in his section.
Then there is the local prodigy Sean Mitchell, who captained Zimbabwe in Uganda. Mitchell is expected to give the Donnybrook crowd some high tech riding in the MX1.
The 21-year-old successfully defended his MX1 title to be crowned African champion for the second consecutive time and he will be hoping to carry that form into weekend’s event.
Bogwheelers club chairperson Gary Grainger said: “It’s going nicely we short on senior riders and so we trying to build from the juniors. It should be a fun filed day on Saturday.”
Granger said Zimbabwe, who had initially been placed third overall at the FIM Africa Motocross Championship, were placed second after results were reviewed.
“We came second overall after the positions were reviewed; we had 637 points behind Uganda who had 652. We had small numbers and this contributed to why we didn’t win the overall event.”
