HARARE - The Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) yesterday told Sports minister David Coltart that the Independent Disciplinary Committee on the Asiagate scandal will wind up its work within two weeks.

The promise was made during a meeting between Coltart, Zifa and the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) on the state of Zimbabwean football.

“While noting concern over the delayed completion of the investigations, the meeting was pleased that the Zifa Ethics Committee was expected to finalise the matter in the next week or two,” read part of a press release from SRC Director General Charles Nhemachena.

“The meeting observed that the matter had consumed the energies of the new Zifa board over the past two and half years and concurred that there was need for this matter to be concluded to allow the board to focus on developmental issues of the game.”

The meeting endorsed Coltart’s call for a football indaba before the end of September, expected to explore ways of financing football given the financial problems bedevilling Zifa.

“Among the stakeholders expected to participate at this Indaba were relevant government ministries including but not limited to the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture and Ministry of Finance; major corporate sponsors, civic leaders such as mayors, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Sports and Recreation Commission and other interested people.”
