Zim Sevens in disastrous campaign
Monday, 10 December 2012 14:16
HARARE - Zimbabwe yesterday completed a disappointing campaign in the South African leg of the IRB World Sevens Series after losing 33-0 to Spain in the Shield final in Port Elizabeth yesterday.

The Spar Cheetahs had beaten Scotland 21-14 in the semifinals of the Shield to be on the verge of a silver spoon in the Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens yesterday.

Gilbert Nyamutsamba’s men proceeded to the Shield section of the tournament after appallingly losing all three group matches in Pool D.

The Cheetahs were first routed 26-0 by Canada on Saturday before putting on a better showing against Portugal and the United States, who both edged them 17-12 and 21-17 respectively.

In the Bowls quarterfinals, Zimbabwe lost 24-14 to Australia to be downgraded to the Shields.

The Cheetahs’ results completes a disappointing week for Zimbabwean rugby after the national Fifteens side, the Sables, lost 22-7 to Hong Kong in their opening match of the Emirates Airline up of Nations in Dubai on Saturday.

The Sables are severely depleted after the Zimbabwe Sevens management declined to release key players for the Dubai trip. - Sports Writer
