The best is yet to come: Mitch
Monday, 15 April 2013 12:04
HARARE - Old Georgians player-coach Grant Mitchell believes his team can only get better following an emphatic 50-0 victory over debutants Zvishavane Bulls in their opening match of the 2013 Lion Lager National Rugby League at McAdams Fields on Saturday.

The former champions scored 24 points before adding 26 points in the second period after travelling to the Midlands mining town without seven first choice players, fielding 11 debutants.

“I’m very pleased with the way we played considering that we were missing seven of our first team players and also that we had 11 new players making it into the team for the first time,” said Mitchell.

“It’s always difficult playing far away from home after a long road trip and up against a team which is making its debut in the league.

“The win speaks volumes of the depth we have at the club and there is going to be stiff competition for places when regulars return next week. I can’t promise anything at the moment because we are taking each game as it comes, but the best is still to come, this is just the beginning,”

Old Georgians surged ahead early in the first half with a try from tight-head Brendon Brider, who has re-joined from Old Hararians.

Flank Farai Jijita scored a superb try before captain Fortune Chipendu, flyhalf Mitchell, scrumhalf Ian Surtees, fullback Ray Nyatikonde, and centre Sprake weighed in with tries, all converted by Sprake.

Bulls coach Darlington Majoni, a former Shabanie Mine player, described the defeat as a learning curve. - Sports Writer
